✏️ Please Note: The Manual Turf Cutter is one of our most requested features, and we’re excited to improve it in future updates!
While OpenField offers an automatic turf cutter for creating Knock Codes designed to save organizers time, some programs may want to create turfs that cover specific areas to fit their canvassing needs. For example, they may wish to cut turf to include all of a building or create a turf encompassing an entire neighborhood.
The Manual Turf Cutter gives admins more control over their turf and can make canvassing more focused and efficient.
✏️ Please Note: The Manual Turf Cutter is limited to lists of 25k people or fewer. Lists larger than that will trigger the auto turf cutter.

Creating a Knock Code
To manually cut turf, you must first create a Knock Conversation Code.
💡Please click HERE for a refresher on creating Conversation Codes. You will follow all the same instructions to create a Knock Code right up until you click Save + Create Code.
✏️ Please Note: Even if you are going to use the Manual Turf Cutter when creating a Knock Code, you’ll still be asked to enter an Ideal Turf Size, Starting Location, and whether or not to Skip People Search.
After clicking Save + Create Code, you will be prompted to choose whether to run the automatic turf cutter or open the Manual Turf Cutter.
Click Open Manual Turfcutter to proceed.
The Cut Turf Screen
The cut turf screen will display a map of the geographic area where all the doors in your List are located, where each black dot represents a door.
✏️ Please Note: To zoom in and out on the map, use the wheel on your mouse or the plus and minus sign at the bottom right of the screen.
In the top right corner of the map, you will also see a legend displaying the number of unassigned people and addresses that have yet to be added to a turf. The legend begins with Addresses selected.
To view the number of people who have yet to be assigned to a turf, click People next to Addresses.
If you no longer want to cut your turf manually, you can click Run Auto Turf Cutter at the top of the screen.
✏️ Please Note: Running the Auto Turf cutter will delete any Turf you’ve already manually cut.
Cutting Turf
You can begin cutting your first turf by clicking any point on the map. This point represents one corner of the border around the turf.
✏️ Please Note: If you place a point by accident, you can remove it by clicking Undo at the top of the screen.
Continue drawing the rest of the border around the turf by clicking to drop additional points. The second point you drop will connect to the first in a straight line. The third point will connect to the second and so on, forming a polygon, or shape, around the area you want to be included in the turf.
Additionally, as you draw the boundaries of the turf, a lightly shaded area will appear so you can confirm which doors will be included.
✏️ Please Note: You can click and drag any of the control points on an in-progress turf to change or fine-tune the boundaries.
The legend also shows the number of currently selected addresses and people. The numbers update as you change the turf boundaries.
Continue clicking around the map area you want the turf to cover. When you have covered the full turf area, close the turf by clicking on the first point a second time.
When you close the turf, its entire area will be highlighted with a color from a colorblind-friendly palette to help distinguish it. The turf number and color will also appear in the legend, displaying how many people and addresses that turf includes.
✏️ Please Note: To edit a closed turf, simply click the turf again, and it will re-open, allowing you to make changes. To re-close it, re-click the first point again.
✏️ Please Note: A turf does not need to be a square or rectangular shape. Your polygons can be any shape you can create with the points you drop.
Saving Your Progress
If you can’t finish cutting all the turf in your map area at once, you can save your progress and return to it later.
Click Save in the upper right-hand corner of the screen to save your progress.
To return to a map and finish cutting turf, open your Burger Bar menu, and click Maps (Manual Turf Cutter).
Find the map you’re looking for in the list on this page, then click the name to be returned to the Manual Turf Cutter screen.
Finalizing Your Turfs
When you are satisfied with the turfs you have created, you can save them so they’re available for your canvassers to begin walking by clicking Save + Finish at the top right-hand corner of your screen.
✏️ Please Note: Once you click Save + Finish your Turfs will be finalized for knocking and you won’t be able to edit them. If you want to Save your progress but still plan on making changes before Finalizing, click the Save button as described above.
The Conversation Code that corresponds to the turfs you cut can be entered by a canvasser, and they will be able to see and check out the turfs you cut!
